When I think of the mage I imagine a magic master who is an expert in casting spells, this for me is the basis of what a mage is, I have no problem seeing a battle mage in the game, now for the sake of balance if the battle mage will have more defense, it would be natural for him to have less attack, I think of a battle mage as a mage who uses fortification spells or magic shield.
Hi, sorry about my english, is not my main languaje.
i think what the mage armor dont be forced to cloth, i think what mages can use the armor what they want, but if the strength needed is not ok the character cannot move faster or get another balaced debuff (he will get more armor than a other faster cloth mage).
buffable armor for you and your friends, creating a huge cold capes of ice on the platemail armor or chilling the cloth armor, electrifing the gaunlets of your friends... maybe the buff can apply charges // next 5 critical punches with this gaunlets will stun for 4s/2s/1s/1s/1s blablabla...
or create armor (nude mage build for faster movement and low defense), create a icy armor with 10% of weight of a real armor equivalent to your current level and 75% of the defensive power of a real armor equivalent to your current level.
shoulder, gaunlets and belts withs spike damage can be launched with arcane power dealing damage based on the magic power of the user + spike damage of the item, if the mage write a magic circle on the item he have 30min where he can teleport to him the items back, if he forgot will need to run to loot again her armor pieces. (pieces usable like stairway on the wall or like a bridge on the rivers)

In fantasy RPGs there are different types of mages, even because mages are spell masters, but not and because they are spell masters, who cannot be tanks or supporters, I think imagining a mage only as dps makes the class very boring, it would be interesting for us to try to see what a mage who uses fortification spells would be like and then fight using gauntlets, or be a supporter who provides shield, of course that would be a specialization, but I think the idea of the developers is to collect new ideas, not just have the same ideas as always.
Well, I'm not a fan of battlemages, using heavy armor. I like the old style mage with a robe and a staff, casting powerful spells far from battle. So yes, robes please!
Of course, with some defensive spells like Mage Armor, Shield and Mirror Image (DnD) as temporary defense so the mage can have a minimum defense and don't die in 1 or 2 hits.
But that's my opinion of course, based on the Wizard style that I prefer to play. If you want to enter deep in RPG style you could use some feats system that a Mage could choose to user Leather/Mail armor, but with a casting penalty, casting time, chance of failure, etc... but again, you are opening a lot of possibilities for the Class, but it can be very difficult to develop and balance, and it seems to me that most part prefer to play the old style glass cannon Mage.
Good!
I would love to see the melee or close range mage variant.
In a normal way, the mage would say that he will wear the lightest armor, but if we add the possibility of a melee or short-range mage, it would give him the possibility of specializing in leather armor... medium armor, which more added to some skill of Shield should be enough to keep him in melee combat.
All the best!
