Being old MMO gamer, played eq1, eq2, wow and some of the newer ones, I really like thee idea of geting some of the older values back to MMOs.
One thing I simply loved about Everquest 1 and 2, was it had some cool long quests. In Everquest 1 all classes had epic weapon quests. And these quests were really epic. Would take plenty of big raids, a lot of commitment to finish them. With more than a year played gametime I never ended my own epic. Could also be a special equipment slot only to used for you epic for example. It would depend on what the effects on the epics would be.
In Everquest 2 they put in the betrayer questline, a thing I really loved. You could change your faction, but it would take a lot of commitment and at a quite low lvl. If you decided to betray your own faction you would become a kind of rebel, where none of the factions would talk to you or help you. Only after you made it through all of the betrayal quests would the opposite faction accept you. I loved being one of very few betrayers ion Freeport early in the game.
Some of the epics could maybe be special visual effects on spells/abilities where people really could see you had something very rare and hard to get.
